Supporting Documents

You can upload unofficial transcripts to be considered for graduate admissions. Once you are admitted, you must submit official transcripts.

You must submit an official transcript from each college or university you have attended for academic credit, showing all courses, grades, and degrees received. These institutions must send an official transcript to Brooklyn College either by mail or via e-mail. You may also hand-deliver your school’s official transcript in a sealed envelope.

If you have completed academic credits at the City University of New York (CUNY) in 2003 or later, you are not required to send a transcript because the Office of Graduate Admissions is able to obtain these transcripts internally.

Sending by Email

If your school offers electronic transcripts, please have them send the transcript to graddocs@brooklyn.cuny.edu.

Sending by Parchment

If using Parchment, make sure to send all transcripts to Brooklyn College Graduate Admissions, not Brooklyn College. If there is no option for Graduate Admissions, please have your university email them to graddocs@brooklyn.cuny.edu .

Sending by Mail

If your institution is sending transcripts by mail, transcripts must be mailed to:

International Transcript Credential Evaluation

Your international transcripts must be evaluated by a professional agency recognized by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. Evaluations must include course-by-course analysis indicating the type of degree received, the U.S. equivalency of the degree, the graduation date, and a cumulative grade point average. This will help us understand your educational background and academic credentials. Allow plenty of time between the evaluation and the application deadline, especially if you are currently residing outside of the United States and require a student visa.

English Language Proficiency

If you received your baccalaureate (undergraduate) degree or master’s (graduate) degree from a country where English is not the only official language, you must submit an official score from TOEFL, IELTS, Pearson, or Duolingo. To be considered official, your score must be sent directly from the testing administrator from an assessment within the past two years. We only accept TOEFL or IELTS scores that are sent electronically by your test location. Our ETS Institution code is 2046. If you are submitting Pearson or Duolingo scores, ask them to send the scores electronically to Brooklyn College CUNY Graduate Admissions.

Letters of Recommendation

You are required to submit two letters of recommendation for most programs. Note that some programs may require three letters of recommendation. Consult your program website for more information about the requirements. We strongly encourage you to electronically submit letters of recommendation through our online application.

How to Submit Online

1. Provide your recommenders’ details, including current e-mail addresses in the online application.
2. Your recommenders will receive an e-mail from our office within 48 hours of your application submission.
3. Your recommenders will be prompted to submit their recommendation through an online form.

Important Notes

• You cannot change a recommender once you have submitted your online application form.
• If your recommender does not receive the e-mail, advise them to check their spam folder.
• You cannot revoke a recommendation letter once it is in progress or submitted by the recommender.
• If your recommender has not received the link three to five days after completing your application, have them e-mail their recommendation.

How to Get a Good Letter of Recommendation

• The best recommenders are those that know you well and can provide an evaluation of your ability to perform and succeed at the graduate level. You might choose a professor who has evaluated your academic work or a professional with an advanced degree who has supervised you in a job or internship. Recommendations written by family members or friends are not appropriate.
• Contact the recommender and be prepared to articulate your interest and reasons for attending graduate school. Letters of recommendation are written strictly on a voluntary basis. The best approach is to ask potential recommenders if they are willing to write you a strong letter.
• You can help your recommenders write good letters by giving each of them a copy of your résumé and a draft of your personal statement. It can also be helpful to remind them of your past accomplishments, such as a class paper or a project that you completed.
• Letters of recommendation should include a description of how long the recommender has known you and in what capacity, your knowledge of the program and subject matter, your specific accomplishments and projects, how you compare to others in the field, and your relevant professional experience.
• Thank your recommenders after they have submitted their recommendation.

Statement of Purpose/ Personal Statement

Most programs require a typewritten, two- to three-page statement explaining your purpose in undertaking graduate study in your intended program. This is your opportunity to inform us about your goals, interests, and career plans as they relate to your intended academic study. Some programs additionally require essays or writing samples. Résumé

A copy of your most recent résumé is required by some programs.

Portfolios and Manuscripts

You may need to submit a portfolio of creative materials (artwork, videos, or manuscript) to some programs. Consult the program instructions for details. Documents greater than 4096 KB cannot be uploaded with the online application and should be submitted via e-mail.

GRE

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required for a number of graduate programs. We only accept GRE scores that are sent electronically by your test location. Our Institution Code is 2046. View our admissions requirements for details.
